Thailand: On the way to Laos

Thailand is the country of countless temples. Usually they are shiny and colourfull. I found that one beside the  road in Norther Thailand. It was still under construction, so without any colours. But with a great athmosphere in the early morning.

Thailand ist das Land der unzälingen Tempel. Normalerweise sind diese bunt und leuchtend. Ich fand dieses Exemplar in Nord-Thailand, während ich zur Grenze nach Laos fuhr. Da er teilweise noch im Bau war, fehlten die leuchtenden Farben. Dafür glänzte dieser Tempel mit einer tollen Atmosphäre am frühen Morgen.

Thailand: What is better than a bike? 100 bikes!

Auf meinem Weg nach Norden, hatte ich auf ein mal Blaulicht im Rückspiegel. Ich räumte die Überholspur um Platz zu machen. Ich glaubte meinen Augen kaum als an mir ein Konvoi von 100 Big Bikes vorbei zog. Eskortiert von der Polizei! Der Polizist der die Gruppe schloss forderte mich auf, mich einzugliedern. Naja, dachte ich mir, Anweisung ist Anweisung. Beim nächsten Tankstop wurde mir dann erklärt, dass ich unglaubliches Glück hätte, da diese Motorradgruppe auf dem Weg nach Sukhothai sei und mich einlade mitzukommen. Essen sowie Logie sei frei. 

Es handelte sich hierbei um eine Promo-Tour der Tourismus Behörde Thailands, die mit dieser Fahrt auf das Ausflugsziel Sukhothai aufmerksam machen wollte. Unter dem Motto "The dawn of happiness" ging es dann schnell voran, da die Polizeieskorte den Weg frei räumte. 

Glück muss man haben!

Das Programm war umfangreich: Lunch, Empfang der Gouverneurin, Light and Sound Show in historischer Kulisse und Dinner. Am nächsten Tage gab es noch mehr Ruinen des alten Sukhothai zu sehen. Genau das richtige für einen Ruinen-Junkie wie mich.

On my way north, I had at one time blue light in the rearview mirror. I cleared to make space for the fast lane. I thought my eyes lie, when a convoy of 100 big bikes went past. With a police escort! The officer in the end of the Group asked me to integrate myself. Well, I thought, instruction is instruction. 

The next fuel stop I was then told that I had incredible luck, as this motorcycle group was on its way to Sukhothai and invited me to come along. Food and accomodation was free!

It was this is a promotional tour of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, which wanted to draw attention to this trip to the destination Sukhothai. Under the motto "The dawn of happiness" we were driving fast because the police escort cleared the way.

Being lucky!

The program was extensive: Lunch, receiving the Governor, Light and Sound Show in historic scenery and dinner. The next day there was more to see ruins of old Sukhothai. Just right for a ruins junkie like me.

Auf dem Weg nach Bangkok übernachtete ich nahe einem kleinem Tempel. Nach einiger Zeit überraschte mich ein Mönch, der aus dem Nichts erschien. Er und einige andere Angehörige des Klosters brachten mir Früchte, Getränke, Abendessen und luden mich auch noch zum Frühstück am nächsten Morgen ein.

Bangkok ist eine unglaubliche Stadt in jeder Hinsicht. Tempel, Märkte, Verkehr, Hitze, Fressbuden und buntes Treiben an jeder Ecke. Ich habe tonnenweise Fotomaterial... präsentiere hier aus Zeitgründen nur eine kleine Auswahl um einen Eindruck dieser pulsierenden Stadt zu geben. 

Warum ich Glück und eine eigenes Büro in Bangkok hatte, seht ihr dann in der nächsten Folge.

On the way to Bangkok I stayed near a small temple. After some time, I was surprised by a monk who appeared out of nowhere. He and some other members of the temple brought me fruits, drinks, dinner and invited me to have breakfast the next morning.

Bangkok is an amazing city in every aspect. Temples, markets, traffic jam, heat, food stalls and hustle and bustle on every corner. I have tons of photo material ... but present just a small selection (because of the time I need to upload) to get a taste of this vibrant city here.

Geschichte der etwas anderen Art. "Die Brücke am Kwai" kennt jeder.

Während des 2. Weltkrieges wurden große Teile Südostasiens von der japanischen Armee besetzt. Die Besatzer zwangen Einheimische und Fremdländische Kriegsgefangene zu harten Arbeitseinsätzen im ganzen Land. Besonders viel Energie wurde auf die Errichtung eines Schienenstranges gelegt, der die Versorgung der Besatzungstruppen sicherstellen sollte. Da die Fertigstellung einen großen Vorteil brachte, wurden die Gefangenen gezwungen Tag und Nacht zu arbeiten. Die Versorgung mit Lebensmitteln und Medikamenten war so gut wie nicht vorhanden. Während der Zwangsarbeit starben tausende von Männern an Überarbeitung, Malaria, Schlangenbissen, Erschöpfung, Folter und den schlechten hygienischen Verhältnissen.

Nachdem die Brücke fertig gestellt worden war, fand ein Luftangriff der amerikanischen Luftwaffe statt. Die Japaner zwangen die Häftlinge sich auf die Brücke zu begeben und den Bombern zu zu winken. Die Brücke sollte so verschont bleiben, dass erhofften sich wenigstens die Besatzer. Doch die Piloten hatten ihre Befehle und das Ziel war von zu hoher strategischer Bedeutung. So starben unzählige Häftlinge im Bombenhagel der eigenen Bomber. Die Brücke wurde zerstört.

1946 wurde sie von einer japanischen Firma wieder aufgebaut und steht noch Heute.

History of a different kind, "The Bridge on the River Kwai" everyone knows.

During the 2nd World War, large parts of Southeast Asia were occupied by the Japanese army. The occupiers forced locals and allied prisoners to hard work assignments throughout the country. A lot of energy was put on the construction of a rail track, which should ensure the supply of the occupation forces. Since the completion was of a great advantage, the prisoners were forced to work day and night. The supply of food and medicines was virtually non-existent. During the forced labor of thousands of men died from overwork, malaria, snake bites, exhaustion, torture and poor hygienic conditions.

After the bridge was completed, there was an air raid of  the U.S. Air Force. The Japanese forced the prisoners to go to the bridge and wave to the bombers. The bridge should remain spared that at least hoped  the occupiers. But the pilots had their commands and the target was of high strategic importance. A countless number of prisoners died in the bombing of their own bombers. The bridge was destroyed.

In 1946 it was built by a Japanese company again and still stands today.

Phuket ist die größte Insel Thailands. Eine Brücke verbindet das Festland mit dem Eiland. Wenn der Reisende im Inneren der Insel unterwegs ist, merkt er nicht, dass er komplett von Wasser umgeben ist. 

Darum wurde auch, der sonst übliche Namenszusatz "Ko", was Insel bedeutet gestrichen. 

Das Azurblau des kristallklaren Wassers und das Gold der Tempel und Buddha Statuen sind die Hauptfarben der Insel. Hell und leuchtend blenden sie den Besucher und laden zum eintauchen in Kultur und Natur ein. 

Im Süden der Insel befindet sich der höchste Berg. Auf diesem thront der weiße "Big Buddha" und schaut auf die Insel hinab.

 Während ich in Europa und im Iran die Ruinen großer Kulturen und Religionen bewundern durfte, wurde mir hier die Ehre zuteil, der Errichtung eines solchen außergewöhnlichen Kulturgutes beizuwohnen. Denn der Buddha und das umbebende Gelände ist noch nicht komplett fertig gestellt. Faszinierend war das Innere. Dieses besteht aus einem Betonskelett, welches die äußere Marmorhülle trägt.

Dieser Ort ist natürlich ein Publikumsmagnet und so führte ich auch einige Gespräche mit Deutschen und Holländern. Abends lernte ich dann auch noch 4 deutsche Urlauber kennen, die mich kurzer Hand zum Übernachten in ihren Bungalow einluden. Eine schöne Abwechslung zwischendurch wieder ein bisschen Deutsch zu sprechen :-)

Phuket is Thailand's largest island. A bridge connecting the mainland to the island. If the traveler is on the way in the interior of the island, he does not realize that he is completely surrounded by water.

So also, the usual prefix "co", which means island was canceled.

The blue of the crystal clear water and the gold of the temple and Buddha statues are the main colors of the island. They dazzle the visitors and invite him to immerse in culture and nature.

In the south of the island is the highest mountain. This perched on the white "Big Buddha" and looks down on the island.

  While I was in Europe and Iran I could see the ruins of great civilizations and religions, Here it was the honor to witness the establishment of such an extraordinary heritage. Because of the Buddha and the site is set umbebende yet complete. Intriguing was the interior. This consists of a concrete frame which supports the outer shell marble.

This place is of course a crowd, so I took some talks with German and Dutch. In the evening I got to know even 4 German tourists, who invited me to stay out of hand in their bungalow. A nice break in between to talk back some German :-)
